Scooby Doo

We're looking forward to a friend's birthday party this weekend where they've rented a movie theater and will be showing original Scooby Doo movies. It is in an old fashioned theater that usually shows dollar movies in the afternoon/evening. I wonder if we'll be able to have red slushies.
After the Scooby party, each of the kids was invited to a different birthday party, both starting at 2. Estelle will be roller skating and George will be at a sports party.
The Curious George movie is now being advertised for February (as George says "coming to a theater near you") so we might see that on President's Day since Estelle has the day off.
She's now getting ready for her birthday - 4 weeks away. She wants to go to a hockey game (Toledo Storm) and has also decided that she is right handed so she needs a new glove for coach pitch baseball (she's graduated from t-ball this year). It is so interesting that she is sports minded. We're going to a Super Bowl party and she wants to watch the game as opposed to her other friends who have no idea what it is.

The Day of the Party

We started out this morning with a call from George's school saying they had no heat and were closed until they could figure it out. Since John had already left for teaching at Owens and has no cell phone, we grabbed a Power Rangers activity book and his art kit (phew, thanks again for that one Jeff & Meghan) and headed to the office after dropping Estelle at school. The rules were "Quiet" and "Listen to mommy". He did great and I'm thankful that nickjr.com isn't blocked because he was focused on that for about 2 hours when I wasn't using my computer. For the afternoon he went over to his friends Ian and Marina's house. Their mom said he can come over any time because her kids actually got along with him there.

We weren't sure who would not make it to Chuck E. Cheese, especially since all the kids from his class had to stay home today, but only 2 didn't come because of that. We had 21 kids who were exhausted by the time they left, darn good pizza, and quite a few tokens left over. George has been making a birthday party list for about 8 months now and was happy that the 5 girls his age whose names he constantly asked how to spell and his former pre-school teacher Miss Jenn all came and had fun. That was really sweet of her! We had 2 cakes - one white and one chocolate - and he chose rainbows for the frosting. Thankfully we have very little left over.

He did get some presents even though we'd said don't bring any. He used his Chuck E. Cheese tickets to buy a cool tye dye shirt that he's now wearing to sleep in. Planning on letting him sleep late in the morning tomorrow too.

Only bad thing was with all the craziness of the morning I didn't bring the camera. Hmmm ... a return trip there might be ... oh no what am I thinking?!

Five and Five

No, not twins, but when asked how old my children are I have to say "Five, and five." Estelle was excited to wrap all the presents and George was good about sharing his toys after he opened everything.

He's now doing a countdown to next Tuesday when he's having 26 of his closest friends to Chuck E. Cheese for dinner. Anyone care to donate towards this cause? John says it will be the most expensive party ever ... I think he's forgetting we're going to an indoor water park in February for Estelle's birthday, though that will only be with her cousins. Thank goodness we said NO presents - we have enough in the toy room.

We hope to have a quiet weekend of sleeping late, watching football, doing laundry, and eating up the muffins. Maybe a few rounds of Atari thrown in there too.

This Old Man

George has been singing "This Old Man" - up to 30 ... though I have to come up with the things for the old man to play knick knack on. It is quite funny in light of it being his last day as a 4 year old today.
He got quite a bounty yesterday - chocolate surprise muffins from Gumpy & Grandma Muffin (who were also very nice to include blueberry muffins for Estelle) , a check that he'll put in his bank account to make his number bigger from Gramma R. (that he's excited about because he also got a check from Grandma Winky so now he has a HUNDRED BUCKS), and the other big hit was the t-shirt (that he's wearing today) and Target gift card from Grandma June & Allan. The gift card is a monkey, which he loves, and it has holes in it so it can be a finger puppet. He's looking forward to going shopping. Items under consideration for purchase include toys, rainbow sheets for his bed, a lamp, and DVDs. Don't think he can fit that all in but he hopes they let him keep the gift card after he spends his money. Thank you to everyone!

Toys and Food

George got his Power Ranger toys from Unky Jeff & Aunt Meghan yesterday. They were a big hit. Thanks! He's named the red Power Ranger "Austin" and talks to him on the phone when there's a big emergency situation - asking him if he can be there in one second. Oh what an imagination!

Estelle and John did indeed go shopping for his birthday presents yesterday on their day off together. They got him a Wiffle Ball set (in hopes that he won't dislike ALL sports, only soccer) and a chin up bar that will probably be set up in his closet.

He's decided on homemade cheeseburgers and french fries for his birthday meal. He first stuck with his favorite choice - sweet potatoes, cauliflower, and ham that he says all together so it sounds like sweetatoecauliflam - but since he's getting older he decided that change is good. The treat at school will be Spiderman cupcakes and the cake for his party will be half chocolate / half vanilla with rainbow frosting. You know, he might grow up to be a party planner instead of a t.v. ad executive ... although this morning he told Miss Gayla in great detail about the commercial about Trix cereal that he was eating for breakfast.

Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids!

Wiggly Estelle

We think there might be a visit from the tooth fairy at our house shortly. Estelle's bottom front left tooth is very wiggly! She can move it with her tongue. She will be very happy if she indeed loses her first tooth while she's still 5. I hear the tooth fairy brings five bucks for the first tooth!

George's teeth, on the other hand, are firmly planted in his mouth.

One More Week

George is counting down the days until he is 5. He still hasn't decided what to have for his dinner or what image he wants on his cake. We might introduce the concept of ice cream cake but don't know if we can put Power Rangers or Dora on one.
Seems like we're all back to good health at our house. Estelle has a 1/2 day Friday and the day off on Monday. She's looking forward to a day with daddy. Maybe they'll go shopping for George's birthday present.

Oh I forgot these!

Some funny pictures from John's birthday.

Back to normal ... whatever that is ...

Estelle went back to school on Wednesday and had a good week there. George didn't miss any school but did have problems going to bed and falling asleep this week. It is too dark, too light, too cold, too hot, too everything in his room unless someone is in there sleeping with him. Too bad we can't just make Oscar sleep in there but he won't go ...
We went back to gymnastics this week. George was glad to see his little friend again, and he got a kiss and hug when he invited her to his upcoming birthday party.
Today is a lazy day. We've got to put away most of the Christmas decorations, though we'll leave a few things out given that we're having a party here on the 18th.
Last night we went to a potluck at church and undecorated everything there. It only took about an hour with 30 people working on it. Since it was Epiphany we ordered 2 "King's Cakes" from a local bakery and they were delicious. Check out http://www.cresourcei.org/cyepiph.html for some interesting info. The cheese ball I took was another hit - cream cheese, chopped green onion, one package of Buddig beef lunch meat cut into small pieces and some Worcestershire sauce all smushed together. Put it in plastic wrap and shape it into a ball. Easy and very good. Of course, kids preferred mac & cheese.

Itchy Atchy Ootchies

George took an oatmeal bath last night and really liked it. It helped his strep rash, what he calls "Itchy Atchy Ootchies". Doctor also suggested he take Benadryl, and that it might make him drowsy, but my experience has been that it hops him up. He'll have a fun day at school today!

Estelle got up this morning after sleeping about 5 hours yesterday during the day then going to bed at 9PM feeling better. She went to school, at breakfast, then apparently threw up in the hallway on her way to class. John went and picked her up and will stay home with her today. He plans on making her rest some more. So much for perfect attendance in elementary school!

Last night about 10:30 the electricity went out. It appeared it was only our house, and we went out and saw that the power line had come down in the back yard. It was still attached to the house but not the pole. John turned off the breaker and we went to bed after calling. I think it was about midnight they came to fix the line - pretty good service. All was back together again this morning, though John said there was still a line in the yard. He thought it was the cable but I think it is probably the old phone line we don't use any more. Suppose he can figure it out today since he's staying home!

Strep & Happy New Year

George threw up at the movies on New Year's Eve. Ugh.
Then late yesterday he broke out in a rash ... helping to identify what's wrong with him as strep throat. We were all ready to call the doctor this morning when Estelle started throwing up too - so they both went and were both quickly positive on the throat swab. Oh boy! At least we got chewable antibiotics. Oatmeal bath and Benadryl are supposed to help George's rash as well. Plus we had to throw out toothbrushes.
John's birthday yesterday was quiet. We had Kenny over for dinner of sausage and hoppin' John. The kids wanted the rice and peas separate, so I let them do that, then they ended up mixing them together anyhow!
We took down the Christmas tree today. Still putting all the Hallmark ornaments back in boxes. Need to clean up in the attic before re-storing everything. No Land's End bear this year but John thinks I should put all the bears back into their boxes for storage instead of keeping them out. Since "out" means they are in George's closet he's probably right.
Hopefully kids will be healthy enough to go back to school tomorrow. I have a feeling work is going to be busy!
